I think of this scenarios like she discovered every-time someone uses a line like "studies show", the only thing the study shows is that the author wants a bump in clout.
There's a great list of examples halfway down the page. For example:
"A growing body of evidence..." (Where is the raw data for your review?)
"People are saying..." (Which people? How do they know?)
"It has been claimed that..." (By whom, where, when?)
"Critics claim..." (Which critics?)
etc...
